‘Hitchcock? Worst Episode?????’
There I was, innocently reading through some of the discussions on Universal Playback, when I came across this post…. ‘What is the worst episode of ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents ’ ?’
‘Argh! Sacrilege!’ I almost cried out loud. But wait; maybe this member had a point.
Let’s put it this way, I have never seen the episode entitled, ‘Mr. Blanchard’s Secret’, but perhaps it is a bit naff…. After all, you are bound to have the odd one or two stories which are not quite up to the same high standard as the rest. It’s inevitable I’m afraid.
So, I forgave this member of the forum. At first glance I had thought he (or she) had been dissing the show and preventing viewers from discovering its indisputable magic. And that would have been totally unacceptable!
Every long-running show, even such classic ones as ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’, can be forgiven for having the odd story that is a bit weak. If I sit and think about all of my personal favourites from over the years (and if I am totally honest with myself), then they all have at least one episode which doesn’t quite cut the mustard.
And I suppose it is okay for fans to talk about it… but I do say this begrudgingly. Personally, I prefer to talk about the genius of the other stories I have seen. And I am not using the word ‘genius’ lightly either. How else could you describe a film maker such as Alfred Hitchcock? He did not just create works of suspense; he actually defined the genre and paved the way for a whole new generation of directors.
The work of Hitchcock is still just as good when you watch it today. He was an incredibly talented man who was many years ahead of his time.
