Sleep deprivation can be categorized into two types – acute sleep deprivation and chronic sleep deprivation. In both the types, the quality and quantity of sleep gets badly hampered.

There are certain symptoms that will show you that you are suffering from sleep deprivation. They are drowsiness, lack of appetite or too much hunger, problems in cognitive abilities like attention, concentration and memory, irrational anger, feelings of tension and depression.

However, just as everything has certain causes; sleep deprivation has a set of etiological factors too. The most important factor is stress. An inability to sleep due to tension is a commonplace phenomenon. Another important factor is diet. Too much consumption of food can lead to obesity which can hamper a good night’s sleep. Similarly, malnutrition can also lead to the lack of sound sleep. Addictive habits like smoking, drugs and alcohol can cause you to have very restless sleep as well. Frequent travelling and lack of comfortable sleeping settings are also factors of sleep deprivation.

On a final note, if you are facing sleep related issues, it is advisable that you adapt yourself to the right sleeping pattern, have your dinner at the right time, get on to a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
